Historic City

York

A vibrant, festival city

York is rich in world-class visitor attractions, heritage and culture. Perfectly positioned halfway between London and Edinburgh, with three national parks on its doorstep, no other English city offers such a remarkable blend of history, beauty and diversity.

York’s Roman roots and Viking past are woven into the fabric of the city and visible in its ancient streets, formidable city walls, and the charming maze of snickelways. Alongside this heritage sits a modern vitality, reflected in an exceptional independent retail, cafés and gastro scene. Crowned Britain’s home of chocolate and the most haunted city in Europe, York’s thriving creative and arts community has also earned the city UNESCO City of Media Arts status.

Visit York, part of Make It York, is the leisure tourism brand and the official Destination Management Organisation for the city.
