Historic City

Carlisle

City of the lakes

Carlisle has been a significant place since well before Roman times. It is at the northern extreme of the North West of England, only 10 miles from the Scottish border, and is the urban capital of the county of Cumbria.

If it’s fun you want, from extreme sports to quality time with the family, Carlisle has the places to play, plenty of quality and quirky dining and drinking experiences and the attractions to visit, including the 900-year-old cathedral and medieval castle. Carlisle is surprisingly easy to get to and a perfect base for exploring Hadrian’s Wall, a World Heritage Site and the most important Roman monument in Britain which evokes a strong sense of standing on the edge of empire.

Discover Carlisle

Discover Carlisle is lead by Cumberland Council as one of its outward facing brands to promote the area as the perfect place to visit, live, work and invest. It is underpinned by members of the Carlisle and Borders Tourism Partnership which is made up of a variety of businesses operating in the visitor economy and its supply chain. It operates from Carlisle Tourist Information Centre and provides support for visitors, residents and businesses.

Discover Carlisle (Cumberland Council) is a strategic member of the local LVEP Cumbria Tourism. The two organisations work in partnership to promote the wider Cumbrian geography and provide business support and new product development. It is also part of the Hadrian’s Wall Partnership working across the entire length of the World Heritage Site and beyond. Discover Carlisle also provides strategic support to regeneration projects, economic development, culture and events and strategic visitor management.
